?ZALLAQ, Um Kolthoum and Al Qairawan Schools last night (April 27) notched their respective trophies in the 2014 Schools Mini Olympics, being organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Education Ministry.
Three finals took place yesterday in volleyball, basketball and athletics as Zallaq were crowned champions of the boys volleyball tournament after beating Al Hidd 2-0 in the final match played at the Bahrain Volleyball Association courts in Isa Town.
In the third-place match which took place earlier in the day, Tareq bin Ziyad School team defeated Awal School 2-1 to round off the podium.
Elsewhere, Um Kolthoum School bagged the girls basketball tournament trophy following a well-fought 31-27 victory over Award School in the title decider.
The third-place match was also played earlier yesterday as Zainab School was outplayed 16-34 by Isa Town School, who clinched the competition’s bronze medal.
The opening day of the girls athletics event took place yesterday when Al Qairawan School took 33 points in total to emerge overall champions. Behind them were Al Hidd, with 29 points, in second place. The Arabian Gulf School came in third place with 25 points.
In the first competition of the day, Al Hidd came on top in the 100mx4 relay, then Rawan Ahmed of the same school eluded all her competitors to win the 600m challenge.
Al Qairawan continued to rule the competitions as Hawra Abdulkarim, Sara Mohammed Abdulla and Muna Jehad topped the 1,000m, long jump and high jump events.
Winners in all events were honoured by Bahrain Olympic Committee member Abdulhakim Al Shino and Education Ministry’s Dr Shaikha Al Jeeb at the prize-giving ceremonies.
The Mini Olympics, meanwhile, is scheduled to conclude today with the boys basketball and girls volleyball tournaments finals, in addition to the boys athletics championship and the table tennis tournament.
Today’s programe begins at 11am when Abdulrahman Al Nasser and Othman bin Affan Schools face off in the final of the boys basketball tournament. Both these teams have already met in the first round and it ended in favour of Abdulrahman Al Nasser 81-72.
The third-place match of the same competition will take place earlier today between Samaheej and Al Salmaniya.
At the Bahrain Volleyball Association gym in Isa Town, the final of the girls volleyball tournament is set to take place today at 11am between Um Salama and Qurtoba School.
The boys athletics event will then take place from 4pm onwards at the National Stadium in Riffa, to be followed by the boys and girls table tennis finals at the Bahrain Table Tennis Association premises, also in Riffa.
