“Way to Podium” committee of the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) recently held its first meeting at the BOC headquarters. The meeting was chaired the director of projects at the BOC, Lounes Maden, with the presence of all members namely, representative of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), Rashid Al Zayani, Dr. Francisco Chapman, Dr. Vladimir as a representative of the sports medicine center, committee’s financial controller, Ahmed Al Omari and the committee’s rapporteur, Mamoun Al-Khatib.
 
At the beginning of the meeting Lounes Maden praised the committee members’ competence and experience which, he said, would achieve the desired additions to the committee and would help achieve the goals that the committee was established for.
 
He explained about the first phase on the committee’s agenda which, he said, includes consultations with the technical committees of sports federations to identify unique and gifted sports talents and conducting necessary physiological and medical tests to ensure players’ exceptional peculiarities. It will also include conducting social and psychological interviews with the players to make sure of their strong personality and their level of ambition to work hard to reach higher levels.
 
Maden added that after finishing these procedures, ways of supporting each player will be determined according to his peculiarities and needs, as well as the peculiarities of sport he practices so that the support is individual and accurate in order to achieve wished and agreed targets.
He added that players eligible for the support are divided into three groups, The first group (4 years) includes players of national teams of the sports that have never qualified previously for the Olympic and who have qualifications that allow them to qualify for the Olympics to be held in Tokyo in 2020, the second group (8 years) includes players of national teams who are able to qualify for the Olympics to be held in Tokyo in 2020 and to score an achievement in the Olympic Games to be held in 2024. The third group (12 years) includes outstanding players who will be discovered and enrolled in a long-term program to build a hero who reaches up to the “podium” through a talent-discovery program and primary aim from him or her is to achieve high competitive level during the 2024 Olympics and the possibility of reaching the podium at the 2028 Olympics.
 
The attendees agreed that there should be a database that includes accurate results of the technical, medical psychological and social tests, and everything related to candidates players for the support. They also agreed to set goals, vision and mission for this committee.
