?Leading Bahrain national sports officials commended the initiative of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee President, to allow Bahrain’s elite sports clubs to compete in the Saudi football league from next season onwards.
Shaikh Nasser yesterday (Saturday) made an announcement to a historic decision, in which he said Muharraq Club will be the first Bahraini team to take part in the Saudi Professional League in the 2019/2020 season.
The move is part of a comprehensive plan by Shaikh Nasser in an attempt to develop football in Bahrain and to add more quality to the Bahraini players spearheading the country in future competitions, especially the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Bahrain Football Association will now liaise with the Asian Football Confederation’s Competitions Committee, as well as the world football governing body ‘FIFA’, to meet all the necessary conditions and put this idea off the ground.
National football federations leaders described this idea as one of many crucial contributions of Shaikh Nasser to sports in Bahrain, especially football, and is part of his plan to develop the game in the country to make it capable of competing on an much higher international level.
Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Volleyball Association, said the idea is pioneering and unprecedented on such a level, and will contribute significantly to the development of football infrastructure in the Kingdom, and a boosting step to enter the world of professionalism.
“The Saudi league is considered one of the strongest football competitions in the region and has a popular presence and enjoys great media attention, so the participation of Muharraq will enrich the experience of players and develop their technical abilities,” he said.
On his part, BOC board member and Bahrain Handball Association president Ali Isa Esaaqi said the initiative reflects the strong will of Shaikh Nasser and his sharp vision to support the Bahraini football to reach the highest levels.
“Since His Highness’s (Shaikh Nasser) taking over the presidency of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and the Bahrain Olympic Committee, he has made strides of successes for sports in Bahrain and enabling it to achieve various benefits and gains on may levels,” said Esaaqi.
President of the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation and Shura Council member Sawsan Taqawi said Shaikh Nasser’s idea underlines his keenness to continue adopting various solutions that contribute to promoting football in Bahraini and moving it to a new stage of development through a series of initiatives.
She pointed out that choosing the Saudi league was based on the competition level of the league as well as the media exposure throughout the season, which will have many positive influences on Muharraq Club, the senior team and the Olympic team. It also comes within the framework of strong ties between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain at all levels.
BOC board member and Bahrain Swimming Association president Shaikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa shared the same thoughts as he believes that such a step would bring positive benefits to Bahrain football, in general, and Muharraq club, in particular.
Shaikh Mohammed added that the Saudi league, which includes professional players at the highest levels, in addition to the influence of media and marketing, adds more excitement to the competition, and enrich the Bahraini club’s experience.
Dr Saeed Al Yamani, President of the Bahrain Billiards and Snooker Federation, said Shaikh Nasser’s initiative is one of the pioneering ideas of His Highness, which is one of many initiatives and projects launched by His Highness over the past years, and has a positive influence on promoting sports in the nation.
Al Yamani added that His Highness is determined to lead the development of Bahraini football. He said that the decision is a major step in His Highness’ vision to take the Bahraini football to a new era of competitiveness on a higher level.
