?The Kingdom of Bahrain delegation to the Second Arab Women’s Sports Tournament, being held in Sharjah, is due to return today.
The delegation will be headed by Bahrain Olympic Committee member, Women’s Sports Committee chairwoman and tournament Supervising and Follow-up Committee chairwoman Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.
Bahrain competed in five different sports disciplines during the 12-day tournament in which they took 16 medals in total, including six gold, six silver and four bronze.
It was a significant finish for Bahrain compared to their previous appearance in the first edition in 2012, also held in Sharjah, where they could only win four medals (1 gold, one silver and two bronze).
Spearheading Bahrain in those events were Al Shabab Club (athletics), Al Ahli Club (volleyball), Muharraq Club (basketball), Bahrain Table Tennis Club (table tennis), Bahrain Shooting Club (shooting) and Bahrain Fencing Club (fencing).
Al Ahli Club nearly claimed a podium finish, only to miss third place in their eight-team round robin championship by one point.
Ruth Cay, the American professional player of Al Ahli who was named one of the tournament’s best payers, said she was pleased with her experience in this competition in Sharjah and the overall standard of volleyball players in the Arab region, in general, and in Bahrain, in specific.
Ruth said she was hoping to help her team finish in the top three in this challenging event, but a number of errors by the referees and her teammates during the matches played a major part in the team failing to achieve her aspiration.
The American, however, said she was more than satisfied with the performance of the Bahraini players throughout the competition and the improvement made as the tournament progressed despite her short time spent with the team.
She also affirmed that Al Ahli players have more to give in terms of technical abilities, which she hopes would surface in future championships, and hoped to play again with the team in the third edition of the tournament.
Ruth added that she has received three offers from different clubs in the UAE after her impressive performance in the tournament, noting that these offers are still not official yet but will come down on papers soon.
On his part, Bahrain delegation deputy head Mohammed Al Zayed showed relief over the results achieved by the Bahraini teams in their different events in this second edition tournament.
He said that the major upgrade in the total number of medals won this time is a clear evidence of the development witnessed by women’s sports in Bahrain recently, in line with the overall support offered by the kingdom’s leadership at all levels.
Al Zayed also noted that backing and directives of delegation head Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa to the delegation, which had a significant role in the outstanding results of the teams in their respective competitions.
Shaika Hayat, on the other hand, had a meeting with the administrative and media delegations yesterday (FEB. 11) and thanked them on their efforts during the tournament.
She listened to the views and suggestions of the delegation members in terms of the organization of the tournament and benefit from them to avoid any obstacles when having a similar event in Bahrain.
