?Dr Shaikh Saqer bin Salman Al Khalifa was yesterday (Dec. 19) appointed president of the Bahrain Triathlon Association.
Other board members are Yousef Mohammed Al Thawadi, Abdulmohsin Al Qosaibi, Abbas Mousa, Abdulla Al Shamlan, Sara Al Sammak and Mai Al Hajji.
The decision was declared by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Shaikh Nasser said launching the triathlon association was in line with the need to have a separate foundation organizing competitions for the triathlon, which is regarded one of the certified sporting disciplines and is a combined sport performed by a single athlete –swimming, cycling and running.
Shaikh Nasser noted that Bahrain has recently become qualified to host international triathlon championships, which has attracted large segments of different societies and communities from Bahrain and overseas.
The Supreme Council chairman urged the newly-elected association to establish solid communications with the international federation and benefit from their experiences to develop this sport and set up programmes that would help them in creating a strong foundation of athletes in the kingdom.
Shaikh Nasser added that the Bahrain national triathlon team had remarkable results in previous competitions, which represents a significant boost for the new association and a starting point towards maintaining these achievements and strengthened in the future.
On his part, Dr Shaikh Saqer expressed pride for being given this important task, thanking Shaikh Nasser for his trust in him and vowed to strive in order to live up to the aspirations of the Supreme Council by taking this sport into new horizons of development and progress.
