?Bahrain’s medal hunt at the Fifth edition of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games begins today (Monday) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
Five jiu jitsu athletes will fight to fetch the maiden medals for the kingdom in their respective weight categories, set to take place at the Martial Arts Arena.
Mohamed Abudrees will kick off Bahrain’s hopes today when he takes on Thai fighter Banpot Lertthaisong in the last-16 round of the under-69kg section.
Late on, Bahrain’s Ali Ebrahimi will face Harout Karoghlanian of Lebanon in the last-16 round men’s under-85kg bout, while three Bahrainis – Nijad Al Gosaibi (u-85kg), Ahmed Shebeeb (u-77kg) and Ali Munfaredi (u-77kg) all received byes into the quarter-finals.
The jiu jitsu team is being coached by Reza Monfaradi, who hopes his fighters would reach the semi-finals to ensure podium finish.
Elsewhere, the three-member taekwondo team resumed preparations for the women’s contests as Jumana Mohammed faces Thai opponent Kanjana Sukeewas in the under-75kg’s last-16 round tomorrow.
Juwana, the younger sister of Jumana, will be in action on September 20 when she takes on Thi Nguyen Ha of Vietnam in another last-16 round fight in the under-62kg weight group.
Bahrain’s third team member Walaa Al Doseri heads into her opening women’s under-57-kg fight the following day when she clashes with Chimi Dolma of Bhutan.
The trio Bahrainis are being coached by Tawfeeq Nuwaiser of Jordan, who described the event is an important opportunity for his young players to obtain more experience, improve their skills and rating.
Bahrain is sending nine strong athletes competing in three sports events – jiu jitsu, taekwondo and wrestling – at this 12-day challenge.
Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation president and Bahrain chef de mission Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa, who arrived in Ashgabat on Sunday, met members of the delegation and gave a motivated speech ahead of the games action.
