?The 2014 Schools Mini Olympics, organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Education Ministry, got underway yesterday (April 22) with matches in volleyball and basketball.
In the girls volleyball tournament, Hamad Town Intermediate School defeated Zainab School 2-1 in Group ‘A’, while Isa Town and Zainab schools outplayed Halima Al Saadiya (28-4) and Al Hidd (44-4), respectively in Groups ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the basketball tournament.
In the boys section, Tareq bin Ziad School eased past Arad 2-0 in Group ‘A’, while in Group ‘B’ Al Hidd beat Al Farabi with the same score.
In a marathon basketball game, Al Salmaniya edged Samaheej 64-63 in Group ‘B’ and Othman bin Affan School followed suit, scoring a five-point 54-49 win over Abdulrahman Al Dakhel in Group ‘A’.
Table tennis and athletics are the other two events taking place during the week-long Olympics, which is open for students aged from 17 years and below.
The Mini Olympics action continues today with the girls table tennis preliminary round matches at the Bahrain Table Tennis Association’s gym in Riffa.
There are also two matches in the basketball tournament where Arad take on Halima Al Saadiya in Group ‘A’ and Um Kulthom play Al Hidd in Group ‘B’.
In the volleyball tournament, Yathrem face off with Qortoba in Group ‘A’, to be followed by Isa Town vs Zainab Group ‘B’ clash.
In the boys section, Abdulrahman Al Nasser School facing Othman bin Affan in the boys basketball tournament Group ‘A’ tie at 3.30pm at West Riffa Intermediate Boys School. It will be followed Al Hidd vs Samaheej match in Group ‘B’.
Two matches are scheduled to take place in the boys volleyball tournament as Arad face Awal in Group ‘A’, then Zallaq meet Al Hidd in Group ‘B’.
The officials opening ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow (April 24) and will be under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
This edition Mini Olympics is sponsored by Palace Projects, who will be presenting trophies and medals to the winners, while McDonalds is also contributing with free daily meals to the participants.
