An initiative to promote physical literacy, organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee’s Olympic Academy, was recently launched with 20 government schools across the kingdom hosting a series of seminars for boys and girls students.

The idea of this project is in line with the directives of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, and BOC President, in an attempt to spread the concept of physical literacy among youngsters at home, pre-school and school stages. Several film materials are being used to reinforce these concepts and to explain the most appropriate methods of exercise at each stage of life.

Director of the Bahrain Olympic Academy Nabil Taha commended the positive interaction of the educational authorities at schools, and noted the fruitful cooperation from the schools’ principals and the great attention paid to this programme.

“We have received great interest and appreciation from all the teachers and educational bodies at the schools we visited. We also found a strong desire to acquire many skills and knowledge in the field of physical literacy,” said Taha.

He stressed that the second phase will be measuring the impact of this initiative, stressing the need for a period of time to achieve promising results in cooperation with various partners, such as the Ministry of Education, media and other relevant partners.

On his part, head of Physical Education Department at the Ministry of Education Dr. Essam Abdulla praised the initiative of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa to promote physical literacy in order to achieve sports excellence and to build a disease-free healthy society.

He added that the programme complements the efforts of ministry through physical education directorate to promote athletic activities at schools, which embody the policies of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, headed by Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and in line with the directives of the minister Dr Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi.?
