PERFORMANCE
AND FITNESS ASSESSMENT TESTING

The BOC is committed to providing performance and fitness assessment testing services to all sections of society, including elite athletes, adults and youth, in order to promote and monitor healthy sports and physical exercise at all levels.

THE NATIONAL CENTER OF EXPERTISE
AND PHYSICAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT

The Center was established in 1981 under an agreement signed between the Supreme Council of Youth and Sports, and the United States Sports Academy. The agreement included the establishment of a Sports Physiology Laboratory targeted at elite individual athletes and members of national sports teams, to assess their physiological and functional level of respiratory and metabolic systems for physical effort and muscular abilities.

THE PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE LABORATORY

In 2015, the scope of the existing laboratory was enhanced with the addition of state-of-the-art equipment, and its services extended to the general public to undertake a set of required tests for a reasonable charge, before starting physical activity. It provides a wide range of performance and fitness assessment testing services, which include the following:

Check and evaluate the cardiorespiratory condition of all people undertaking physical activity, and suggest an appropriate exercise programme
Perform medical control of the training of high-performance athletes
Assess electrical activity of the heart (ECG), body composition, nutritional status, resting metabolic, and give specific recommendations in each case
Diagnose and suggest treatment of any pathology that may appear.

Help to prevent sudden cardiac fatalities in athletes and non-athletes.

FITNESS TESTING AND EVALUATION

The Laboratory provides comprehensive fitness control and evaluation, through provision of the following tests:

VO2 Max
Maximal oxygen consumption, maximal oxygen uptake, peak oxygen uptake or maximal aerobic capacity.
Rest Metabolic Rate Testing
Provides critical data through a simple 10-minute breath test in the Gaz Analyser System machine.
Vertical Jump Test
Measures coordination, concentric force on lower limbs.
Bio-impedance Body Analysis
Measures body composition and body fat in relation to lean body mass, which is an important part of any comprehensive health and nutrition assessment.

Electrocardiogram Test:
Assesses if an athlete’s heart is fit for sports performance and identifies eventual disorders that could lead to sudden death.

Stress Test ECG
Diagnostic quality 12-lead stress testing ECG is available in telemetry or cable configuration.
Electrocardiographic ECG
Recording system for continuous monitoring of heart rhythm and evaluation of ischemic ECG changes during exercise and recovery.
Isokinetic Dynameter
Evaluates strength, endurance, power, and range of motion of all major joints and muscles, and provides highly detailed objective data results of an athlete’s performance.
Blood Lactate Testing after Physical Effort
Lactate concentration in blood is a measure of anaerobic metabolism, which occurs when cells are not getting enough oxygen to support normal aerobic energy production. Lactate has an important role not only in diagnosis, but also in monitoring and prognosis.
