The tremendous success of the Nasser 9 Football Tournament was the centre of attraction at the third and concluding session of the Bahrain Olympic Committee’s (BOC) weekly open Ramadan Majlis.
Visitors of this two-and-half-hour social gathering noted the impressive influence of this rapidly growing football competition in the Bahrain society and how it developed in recent years to become one of the most popular football events in the kingdom.
Held at the committee premises in Seef, this first-of-its-kind meeting was at the invitation of BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, who welcomed representatives of sports associations, athletes, media, parliament and municipality councils.
Late on, Askar noted the significant contributions of Bahrain’s veteran photographer Jaffer Ali, who retired recently after serving over 30 years in sports photography. Ali received a special award on this occasion in appreciation to his efforts.
Among high-ranking sports officials attending the first meeting were parliament council members Ghazi Al Rahma, director of Shaikh Nasser Media Office Tawfeeq Al Salehi, BOC board members Dr Khalid Al Alawi and Ali Eshaqi and presidents of national sports federations.
They are Dr Saeed Al Yamani (snooker & billiards), Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa (cycling), Shaikh Mohammed bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (swimming), Col. Khalid Al Khayyat (mixed martial arts).
The event was part of the BOC programmes launched as per the directives of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, and BOC President, aimed to promote sports in general and strengthen ties with the Bahrain sports society.
