?Bahrain women’s fencing team is stepping up their preparations for the second edition of the Women’s Sports Tournament, to be held in Sharjah from February 1 to 12.
The nationals, who are due to compete in floret and eppe contests, will be competing with eight fencers, including Maryam Fareed Jaber, Mona Ahmed Qassim and Sumaya Khalid Al Buainain.
The remaining five team members are Rawan Bader Saleh, Maha Mohammed Al Dossary, Sara Salah Al Suwaidi, Sara Khalil Akbar and Maram Mohammed Ahmed.
Bahrain’s delegation, which leaves for Sharjah on February 1, will be accompanied by team head coach Ahmed Al Durazi and international referee Abdulrahman Jassim.
Team administrator Nahed Al Afnan said the players have been training hard in recent sessions in an attempt to improve on their physical and mental preparations in time for the tournament.
She said the team has been practicing twice a week for over a week at the Bahrain Fencing Association Gym in Um Al Hassam, noting that their late training programme was due to the players’ commitments to their secondary stage school exams.
Al Afnan expressed confidence in the players to achieve the aspired results on their debut in such an international event, noting that the Qatari team will enter the competition as one of the strongest contenders.
Al Afnan lauded the continued follow up of Bahrain Olympic Committee’s woman’s sports committee chairwoman Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, who is also heading the Bahrain delegation for the tournament.
Bahrain is scheduled to take part in six sporting disciplines at the event, namely volleyball, athletics, table tennis, basketball, shooting and fencing.
