?High-ranking officials from the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) attended yesterday (June 5) the Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting of  Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in Kuwait.
BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar and board member Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa represented Bahrain in this two-day summit, chaired by Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Shaikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah.
The OCA unanimously approved the nomination of China’s Yu Zaiqing to be the Vice President (Asia) on the Executive Council of ANOC.
Yu, who is an International Olympic Committee Vice President, was the only candidate and his nomination by Shaikh Ahmad was met with a round of applause by delegates at the OCA headquarters building.
Shaikh Ahmad, who is also the OCA president, said that Zaiqing was the only candidate for the post who was unanimously elected by the council’s member countries, adding that the general assembly also elected Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad Al Mas’hil as president of the Education Committee for the council, replacing his late compatriot, Mohammad Al Haryul.
The council also authorized the ANOC and OCA chief to complete all pending issues regarding Hanoi’s request to be relieved from hosting the 2019 Asian Olympic Games due to organizing and financial issues.
The council’s general assembly also authorized Shaikh Ahmad to openly take a decision concerning negotiations with countries that wish to host the continental event instead.
The OCA President was given the authority to close the file on Hanoi’s withdrawal to host the 2019 Asian Games after consultations with marketing and legal experts.
Shaikh Ahmed said several cities were interested in hosting the 18th Asian Games after the withdrawal of Hanoi, and he was given the flexibility to bring forward the year of the competition from 2019 to 2018 if it proved more attractive to interested parties. The OCA plans to announce the new host city at the General Assembly in Incheon, Korea, this September.
The General Assembly in Incheon will also hear the evaluation committee report of preparations for the 2017 Asian Youth Games in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. Hambantota was given three months to show signs of improvement in their preparations by the OCA Executive Board on March 31.
