?The Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) joined other government and private sectors parties in celebrating the Bahraini Women’s Day yesterday (Monday).
A special gathering, held at the BOC premises in Seef and attended by the committee women’s staff, was in recognition of the Bahraini women’s efforts in all areas.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, the BOC and Women’s Sport Committee chairwoman Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa was the patron of the occasion.
During the event, Shaikha Hayat paid tribute to women for the crucial role they have played in this vital sector for more than 50 years.
“At the Bahrain Olympic Committee, we recognise and celebrate the significant contributions our female members of staff have made to our overall success,” said Shaikha Hayat as she handed over colorful flowers to staff members.
Shaikha referred to the achievements of Bahraini women in the field of legislative and municipal work, which witnessed honorable examples of women personalities working in this field. She expressed her happiness six women have reached the parliament council while four made it to the municipal council recently.
She also thanked Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, His Majesty the King’s Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and BOC President, for his unlimited support to women’s sport, Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Vice-President of the BOC, and Secretary General of the BOC Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar for their efforts.
It’s worth noting that each year, the Bahraini Women’s Day is held under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King, and the President of the Supreme Council for Women. It recognises Bahraini women’s achievements in a different sector.
 
HRH Princess Sabeeka announced the theme of the Bahraini Women’s Day 2018, which is devoted to honouring women in the legislative field and municipal work.
Bahrain women’s involvement in municipal work goes back to the 1920s when they took part in the first municipal elections held by Bahrain then.
The theme was also chosen to celebrate 20 years since Bahraini women entered the appointed Shura Council, and 15 years after their access to the elected Representatives Council and municipal councils.
