?Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Abdulrahman Askar congratulated the Bahrain national swimming team on return after taking part in the 13th GCC Short Course Swimming Championship, which concluded in Doha recently.
The nationals took 50 medals, including 10 gold, 28 silver and 12 bronze at the four-day event, which took place from February 3 to 6 with various age group category contest staged at the Hamad Aquatics complex.
Qatar topped the medal table with 57 medals in total (32 gold medals, 15 silver medals, 10 bronze). The prestigious event brought together four teams including hosts Qatar, the UAE, Oman and Bahrain.
Askar said it was a new record for Bahrain in the history of the competition, which came as a result of the support from the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), led by and representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Work and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Bahrain’s previous record was marked in 1991 in Muscat, where they clinched 32 medals in total. Today, Bahrainis young champions set recorded a new record thus beating their own personal and Bahrain’s previous records in previous GCC swimming events.
The BOC general secretary also commended the efforts of the Bahrain Swimming Association board, headsd by president Shaikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, which played a major part in the results.
In the previous edition of this regional competition which also took place in Doha held last year, Bahrain claimed 35 medals in total.
