?Bahrain yesterday (Oct. 1) had a respectable finish as the curtains fell down on the Third Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang, Indonesia.The nationals completed their bid in this 10-day continental gathering in 11th place with seven medals, including two gold, one silver and four bronze.On the concluding day of the Games, the nationals had big hopes on Hamad Al Binkhalil, who clinched the men’s Kyorugi taekwondo over-87kg category gold medal at Sriwijaya Promomtion Centre.The 23-year-old Bahraini reached the semi-finals, but then faced a more experienced Mahdi Khodabakhshi of Iran, who showed significant strength and stamina to win the game 11-4.The Persian moved on to win the competition’s gold medal after an impressive 5-1 win over Turkey’s champion Yuksel Serdar in the final clash.Al Binkhalil is one of three taekwondo players chosen for this competition. Team coach Tawfiq Nuwaiser also named Fahad Al Bosta, Hisham Al Hashmi, Mohammed Saleh and the only female member Fajar Ebrahim.Fajer was the only Bahraini competitor to win a medal from outside the athletics event, having finished third overall in the women’s poomsae singles.The athletics events, which took place at Jaka Baring Athletic Stadium, saw Bahrain claim all the remaining four medals.Bahrain’s gold medals were won by former world champion Maryam Jamal in the women’s 5,000m and Shitaye Eshete in the women’s 10,000m.The kingdom’s only silver was won by Mohammed Yousif in the men’s triple jump, while Mahboob Hasan and Tareq Mubarak took the bronze medals in the men’s 10,000m and 3,000m events, respectively.The Games, meanwhile, concluded yesterday with the finals of the taekwondo and wushu events, followed by the closing ceremony at the Bumi Sriwijaya Stadium.Bahrain sent 21 athletes for the 10-day Islamic Solidarity Games, which was held under the slogan “Unity and Harmony” with around 1,759 athletes and 624 officials taking part.There were 13 sporting disciplines in this edition Games, namely Athletics, Aquatic-Swimming, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Karate, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball Indoor, Volleyball Beach, Weightlifting and Wushu.In addition to Bahrain, other participating nations were Algeria, Azerbaijan, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Indonesia, Guyana, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, the UAE and Malaysia.
