?Bahrain’s national beach handball team yesterday secured the bronze medal at the Second GCC Beach Games in Doha.
On the concluding day of the three-team double round robin handball tournament at Al Gharafa Club outdoor grounds, the nationals suffered consecutive defeats to Oman on penalties and then to Qatar 0-2 to miss runners-up finish.
Needing to win the both halves to secure second place, Bahrain’s head coach Essam Abdulla headed into the game with a full force team. But the defeats saw Bahrain settle for the bronze, with Qatar winning the competition’s gold medal while Oman took the silver.
Bahrain also had a heartbreaking performance in the beach football tournament, in which they suffered two straight defeats to title favourites Oman 3-4 and Kuwait 1-6 at Al Gharrafa Club.
Facing recently-crowned Asian champions Oman, Bahrain came from a 0-4 deficit to score three goals by Rashid Jamal, Ayoob Naseer and Khalid Abdulsattar.
Bahrain’s podium hopes were later vanished after losing to Kuwait, with striker Rashid Jamal scoring the only goal. 
In the volleyball tournament, which came to a close on Sunday, Bahrain ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams settled for fifth and sixth places, respectively.
The Bahrain ‘A’ team, comprising Hasan Aqeel and Mohammed Hammad, defeated their ‘B’ team of Ali Hamza and Reda Abdulhussain 2-0. Both teams returned home yesterday.
In sailing, Bahrain’s athletes kick-started their campaigns on the inaugural day, when they took part in races in Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser Standard and the Optimist.
The swimming events gets underway today with Omar Al Malki and Khalid Baba seeking the maiden medals for Bahrain in the 5km in the Katara Cultural Village sea.
Bahrain is also competing in the 3×3 basketball championship, which begins on Wednesday. The team, who arrived in Doha yesterday, is being coached by Talal Mousa who named eight players for the tournament.
They are Ayoob Najaf, Ali Shukralla, Jehad Ahmed, Sayed Jawad, Ahmed Abdulmohsin, Ali Hasan, Abdulla Ali and Mohammed Akbar.
Over 300 athletes from across the GCC are taking part in 13 events across seven sporting disciplines in this week-long games, being held at Al Gharafa Stadium and Katara Cultural Village.
In addition to over 300 athletes, the GCC Beach Games see the participation of 70 team officials and 150 technical officials from the six GCC countries including hosts Qatar, as well as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and the UAE.
They are competing in seven sports events, including beach handball, beach football, beach volleyball, 3×3 basketball, swimming, rowing and sailing.
