?Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) acting general secretary Abdulrahman Askar visited Bahrain’s under-17 volleyball team, the recently crowned Arab champions, who are preparing to defend their title in the GCC Championship, which gets underway on Saturday (SEPTEMBER 7) in Riyadh.Upon arrival, Askar was welcomed by Bahrain Volleyball Association board member Habib Mohammed and Mohammed Al Fardan, director Ahmed Yousef, as well as members of the team as he was briefed on their preparations for the GCC tournament.He praised the players performance in the Arab championship and wished them success in this upcoming new challenge.The Bahraini juniors, who arrived home from Tunisia earlier this week after retaining the Arab Championship trophy, will also head for Saudi Arabia’s capital as the No. 1 favourites. “The Qatari team and Saudi Arabia teams will be a leading contenders for the title, and of course, our team is among favorites,” said Bahrain team assistant coach Ramzi Ahmed.Ahmed noted that the team has reached high level and obtained great experience from their participation in the Arab championship n in Tunisia where they played against top-standard teams from around the region, and hoped to maintain their form in the GCC event to complete double triumph this year.The tournament features five teams as the UAE will not be taking part after its association was suspended by the GCC Volleyball Organising Committee, which affect all UAE teams in all the GCC competitions for two years.Bahrain will begin their title defence campaign in Riyadh against Oman on the first day. They then take on Qatar the following day, their third game will be against Kuwait, while face off with tournament’s host country Saudi Arabia in the concluding game of this single round robin event.
