?Entrants from Qatar and Iraq put on a dominant show to claim honours yesterday (Dec. 7) in the National Day Fencing Championships at the Bahrain Handball Association’s gym in Um Al Hassam.
This day-long event, which marked Bahrain’s National Day celebrations, saw participants from 12 countries from the GCC and other overseas countries competing in three different categories for glory.
The Qataris dominated the show, winning the floret and sabre competitions, while the Iraqis took the epee gold.
In the floret, Qatari Fatma Al Mannai came on top, beating compatriot Lulia Ali Hassan 15-4 in the final fight. Bahraini Maryam Mohammed rounded off the podium along with Tajikistan’s Bobodzanova Maniza.
Another Qatari Nasser Awad Al Anezi clinched the second gold medal for his nation, this time in the sabre event after defeating Kuwaiti opponent Khalid Al Shamlan 15-13.
Ammar Al Amari of Kuwait and Iraqi Hamza Habib Mohsin shared the bronze medal.
Bahrain had big hopes on Mohamed Salman, who reached the final of the epee class, but lost his match to Iraq’s Abdulwahed Mohsin who proved too good to win the competition’s gold medal.
The bronze medal was shared by Ahmed Al Hussain of Saudi Arabia and Abdulrahman Adel Al Hashmi of Qatar.
Following the finals, the awarding ceremony took place and was held under the patronage of Bahrain Olympic Committee acting general secretary Abdulrahman Askar.
Askar, along with Bahrain Fencing Association president Shaikh Ebrahim bin Salman Al Khalifa, presented medals and cash award to the top three fencers in each class.
Askar congratulated the winners in all three categories, and admired the overall performance of the participants while wished other entrants success in future competitions.
On his part, Shaikh Salman highlighted the tremendous success achieved by this championship, noting that his association will now consider to develop the event and ensure its continuity in the future to become part of the International Fencing Federation annual agenda.
Shaikh Ebrahim also lauded the efforts of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, headed by Shaikh Nasserr bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and his continued support to sports associations in Bahrain and especially fencing, which has contributed to the overall progress achieved over recent years.
