?The 18th Asian Games closed at a glittering ceremony in Jakarta on Sunday, bringing down the curtain on a two-week tournament featuring 40 sports.
A show of Indonesia’s rich cultural traditions was highlighted at the closing ceremony, witnessed by a full-house crowd at Gelora Bung Karno stadium.
The ceremony reflected peace, stability, togetherness and prosperity, emphasised particularly by the two Koreas unifying for the first time at an Asian Games.
Bahrain’s delegation, headed by Bader Nasser, were among thousands of athletes from 45 nations in ponchos marched in heavy rain at the stadium at the close of a two-week tournament featuring 40 sports.
The Kingdom’s heroes made the best-ever appearance in the history of the game, having won 26 medals in total (12 gold, 7 silver, 7 bronze) and were 11th overall out of 45 countries.
China were declared overall winners with an unprecedented 289 medals, including a whopping 132 gold. Japan (205 medals) were second, followed by South Korea (177) in third place and host nation Indonesia (98) fourth.
“I declare the 18th Asian Games closed,” said Shaikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), at the ceremony.
Shaikh Ahmad also called on all sportspersons of the continent to meet in four years at Hangzhou, in China, and the symbolic handing over of the OCA Flag to Mayor of Hangzhou Xu Li Yi.
The most poignant moment of course was when the Asian Games flame was extinguished bringing a hush in the stadium.
