?Bahrain’s Al Ahli Club volleyball team last night (Feb. 8) extended their solid comeback to the Second Arab Women’s Sports Tournament, being held in Sharjah.
In their fourth match in this single round robin competition, the Bahrainis registered an easy 3-0 (25-14, 25-4, 25-9) victory over Yemen at Sharjah Ladies Club Gym to boost their podium chances.
It was the third straight win for Al Ahli, who started the tournament with a 1-3 defeat to Kuwait Girls Club, but hit back with a stunning 3-2 victory over defending champions Sharjah Ladies Club, followed by a 3-0 win over Jordan Olympic Club.
American professional Ruth Cay, along with local talents Hessa Al Isa, Najla Turab, Hajer Al Ansari, playmaker Marwa Shamsan and libero Fayza Sayyar guided Al Ahli to a deserving victory.
The Bahraini representatives were given a morale boost while being cheered up by compatriots Muharraq Club basketball team players at the gym right from the start, and were later congratulated on their victory.
Al Ahli will now play their fifth match today against Al Wasl of the UAE at 11am (Bahrain time). The concluding game for the Bahrainis is scheduled for tomorrow when they face Oman’s Saham Club.
In other matches, Kuwait Girls Club scored a hard-fought 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 15-12) win over Al Wasl of the UAE and Jordan Olympic Club beat Saham of Oman 3-1 (25-20, 25-9 24-26, 25-19).
In the basketball tournament, Muharraq Club registered their second victory in the competition, beating Bani Yas Club of the UAE 74-59 yesterday at Sharjah Cultural Club Gym.
Muharraq, who suffered three straight defeats to Sharjah Ladies Club, Jordan’s Contractors Club and Qatar Women’s Club, are still with a chance to finish in the top four in the preliminary round for a berth in the semi-finals.
However, the Bahrainis must win their match today against Kuwait Gilrs Club, which tips off at 2pm, to punch the fourth and final ticket into the semi-finals.
A host of female sportswomen from 14 different Arab countries are competing across seven different sports until February 12 in various venues in Sharjah.
The event, which aims to give a boost to women sports in the Arab world, is the largest of its kind in the region and brings together clubs from Jordan, Algeria, Iraq, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Yemen, Kuwait, Palestine and the UAE.
The seven sports that can be witnessed, free of charge to all members of the public are basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting, and athletics.
The nine venues playing host to the various competitions include the Higher Colleges of Technology Sharjah, Al Shaab Cultural and Sports Club, Al Thiqah Club for Handicapped, Al Andalus School, Sharjah Ladies Club, Al Dhaid Sports and Cultural Club, Wasit Youth Center, Sharjah University, and the Sharjah Cultural and Sports Club.
