?Bahrain celebrated the 2015 Olympic Day on Friday (June 12) with more than 1,500 participants flocking to the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir to witness a memorable packed programme marking this special occasion.
The day-long event, organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), is celebrated all over the world on June 23 every year, but this year’s edition held in Bahrain 11 days in advance as the original date is due to take place during Ramadan.
His Majesty the Kingdom’s representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the event patron, delegated Supreme Council general secretary and BOC vice-president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa to attend the activities.
Shaikh Salman, along with BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar and other high ranking sports officials from the BOC and sports clubs and federations, toured the venue where a variety of activities.
“The Olympic Day is a celebration for youth around the world to observe the Olympic values of Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship, said Askar as he announced the start of the activities.
“We are here to celebrate the three pillars of the International Olympic Committee: Move, Learn and Discover. We also seek to share the international Olympic community its efforts in promoting the principles of Olympism and the noble human values, where this ceremonial occasion has occupies an important part in our annual agenda”.
The day’s activities were conducted by four sports federations – gymnastics, martial arts, maritime sports and disabled sports. Other events which took place on the day were face coloring, pottery coloring, photo corner, children competitions and games.
But the highlights of the day were the walking/running races, in which more than 300 athletes were in the fray. The races was organized in coordination with the Bahrain Roadrunners.
It featured four races of different categories. The first was open for six to 8 years and covered 400 metres. Ceaser Virijhof raced to victory against runner up Mathew Barres and third-placer Donggeun Har, while Clara Mareshova won the girls race, finishing ahead of Jordanna Felaifil, who came second.
In the 800m race, which was open for 9-11 years, Pau Elias topped the challenge with Junbeomhan coming second and Yousef Abed third.
Charlie Sissons won the 1.5km race, which was open for 12-14 years athletes. Behind him were Mohammed Abed and Aziz Qasim in second and third places, respectively. Bruna Elias raced to victory in the girls section, finishing before Alisha Mani, who settled for second place, and Matilda Ebrahim, who rounded off the podium.
The fourth category race was over 5km and was open for those aged from 15 years and above, as Mubarak Al Sulaiti came on top in the men’s section. He was followed by Salah Shajra, Shafiq Saleh, Majed Mohammed, Mahmood Ali, Ahmed Mohammed, Ali Abdo, Fahad Fahhad, Mohammed Rafiq and Faisal Rafiq taking places from second to 10th.
In the women’s section, Kizzy Price topped the race ahead of Soo June Kim, who came second, while Catherine Ebrahim was third. Carol H., Dalal Salama, Najwa Abdulrahman, Manuela Messima, Ann Menon, Najla Al Marzooqi and Radmila Riberiro claimed positions from fourth till 10th.
A lecture on sport nutrition, was conducted by Mohammed Saad, followed by another lecture on sports injuries by Ahmed Al Anzoor, were also conducted.
Late on, Askar honored the winners of the races, and thanked the following companies – McDonalds, Jawad, Trafco Group and Palace Projects for supporting this year’s Olympic Day, and all those who spared no effortrs in making this event an all-round success.
